Manitoba Assessment Clinics

Manitoba Assessment Clinics

There are a number of public and private clinics in Manitoba where your doctor may refer your child for assessment and diagnosis of suspected Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Two publicly funded clinics include the following:

Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY): Child Development Clinic

The Child Development Clinic (CDC) provides assessment and referral support for preschool aged children who have a developmental, behavior or physical disability. Families may be involved with one or several health care professionals (refer to list on the Assessment Process page) who specialize in child development. The CDC is located in Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital at the Health Sciences Centre. Your doctor or pediatrician must refer your child to this clinic to have assessment completed.

The CDC offers rural clinics in Brandon, Dauphin, Morden and The Pas. Referrals from your family doctor or nurse practitioner can be made to the Winnipeg CDC address, or to your Manitoba regional health authority. Please contact the Child Development Clinic at the below address to get additional information about times and dates.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Programs

All Regional Health Authorities (RHA) have a central intake where applications for mental health services are received. Each RHA has developed its own eligibility criteria and central intake process. The central intake team reviews every application and decides the priority of need for services. Depending on the eligibility criteria and priority for services, individuals will be placed into a mental health service provided by the RHA or will be put on a wait list for service. Some mental health services provided will assess and diagnose children and adolescents with ASD. Contact the RHA your family resides in to get additional information on central intake, services and programs provided, and wait lists.

The Manitoba Learning Centre

The Manitoba Learning Centre provides assessment services for children and adults with respect to suspected learning disabilities. Referrals for an assessment can be made directly to the Centre by doctors, social agencies, colleges, schools, business, governmental agencies, parents, or individual clients.

Assessments generally require two half-day sessions, either mornings or afternoons. Results of the assessment are discussed individually with those making the referral and a typed report, outlining the results of the assessment is prepared. Assessments are designed to help those making the referral to plan appropriately to meet the educational and psychological needs of the individual involved. The nature and extent of the learning disabilities can be identified an described along with recommended follow-up procedure. Specific recommendations about teaching methods, strategies, and materials for individual cases may not be possible without further opportunity to evaluate the individual’s particular learning style.

There is a fee for the assessment. Individuals may have partial coverage through an extended health insurance plan.
